Wooden foundry patterns .

Wood is a traditional material for the manufacture of casting patterns. In addition to wood, often using MDF, conventional plywood, or moisture-resistant plywood FSF. The cost of a pattern kit made from wood, MDF, or plywood is lower than when using expensive materials such as metal, aluminum, or polymeric materials.

Wooden foundry patterns will be an excellent choice for a small batch of castings. Depending on the careful operation and proper care with using release adhesives, these patterns can be used up to 500 cycles. Sometimes patterns in wear places are reinforced with metal or polymeric material.

Wooden foundry patterns are usually made of pine, larch or spruce. For complex pivotal boxes use birch or alder, and for front part – beech, maple, clear. It is important that the wood is dried. Therefore, before using the prepared boards need to be dried in natural conditions or in drying chambers. When drying boards in drying chambers, in order to avoid cracking, they are pre-steamed using steam, that is fed into the chamber. Also, during drying, warping, and changing the boards in size is possible. Therefore, when manufacturing the model according to the main draw of the part, the designer increases all sizes by the amount of shrinkage.

Wooden foundry patterns are divided into 3 classes by strength:

First class – patterns that are designed for mass production and to get a pro-pattern. In this case, hardwood (oak, beech, or maple) is used. For large models, the entire main part is made of pine and the protruding parts and corners of beech or maple (sometimes from non-ferrous metal).

Second class – patterns for a limited number of moldings. In this case, material of softer wood species (alder, pine, linden) is used.

Third class – models for single castings. In this case, pine, sometimes spruce is used.

The main disadvantage of using only wood in manufacturing is that natural wood has unstable geometric characteristics (it does not retain its overall dimensions and shape during the expose of temperature and moisture).

At our enterprise, all parts are manufactured on CNC machines. After manufacturing on a CNC machine, the parts of the pattern kit are sanded, impregnated with anti-adhesive agents, and then coated with a special primer to protect them from moisture and painted with enamel on a polyurethane base, that is resistant to mechanical and chemical influences.

Wooden foundry patterns that are made of plywood or moisture-proof plywood FSF.

Plywood is the most popular material in the manufacture of casting patterns. The main advantages of using plywood in production:
  • more stable geometric characteristics compared to wood
  • material is easy to process
  • the finished pattern kit has a lightweight
  • low price
The main disadvantage of plywood is its layered structure. Therefore, all patterns require careful surface finishing. In order to get a perfectly smooth surface you need to apply at least 3 layers of primer and carefully sand out. These casting patterns are great for small batch production.

Wooden foundry patterns that are made of MDF.

The main advantages of using MDF:
  • material is easy to process
  • the material has a dense uniform structure
The main disadvantages of using MDF:
  • the material is very soft
  • the material is afraid of moisture, therefore it is necessary to use special impregnations to improve the protection of the material from moisture.
This material is perfectly suited for art foundry patterns. Its structure allows you to create subtle artistic ornaments with minimal finishing after the machine. Model Poltava manufactures wooden casting patterns of natural wood, FSF, or MDF of any complexity and as soon as possible.

We use modern equipment, advanced design programs using 3D models, which allows us to make wooden foundry patterns of any complexity with a high level of accuracy and in the shortest time. Our many years of production experience allows us to take into account the specificities of foundry patterns made of wood usage in various casting processes.

We ensure the full cycle of manufacturing wooden pattern kits. Full compliance with production technology in accordance with the world standards in the casting industry. High reliability, maintainability, and accuracy of patterns. We guarantee the maximum geometric accuracy of the resulting castings. Optimal pricing policy.

It is important to understand that wooden foundry patterns, in addition to the forming surfaces contains a huge system of channels through which metal will be flowed. The size of these channels must be correctly calculated according to foundry technology. Also, it is important to maintain the correct slopes. In addition, the process of creating pivotal boxes (as one of the important elements of the kit) is a technologically complex and time-consuming process. Therefore, if you are not an expert in foundry technology, it is better to contact the specialists of our company. This will help you save time and money.
